Albumen print, 18 x 15 1/4 inches, on original card mount; scratch and closed tear outside of image area; signed on mount "For Col. John V. Lewis, with kind regards of Lt General P.H. Sheridan." Laid into overmat with descriptive plaque. [Chicago?], circa 1876

Additional Details

Sheridan was a Union cavalry general in the Civil War and then the Indian wars. His commander in the Civil War, Ulysses S. Grant, said "General Sheridan has no superior as a general, either living or dead, and perhaps not an equal." In 1883 he would become commanding officer of the United States Army.
